SOLVING ROOM AIR conditioning PROBLEMS

Basic refrigeration principle is easily traced in a room air conditioning, for all of the major components are quickly located. Note that the appliance makes use of two fans one to drive off heat given off by the condenser and another to distribute the air that is cooled by the evaporator. Compare the diagram below to the one on page 284 and note similarity. Courtesy of Carrier Corp.
THE AIR-MOVEMENT
Many difficult-to-detect problems which arise in air conditioning can be traced to malfunctions in the air-movement system. Evaporator fan at the cooling coil draws warm let it through the cold evaporator coils, where it is cooled and removed, and then pushes the air back into the room. A condensation at the condenser coil outside the house brings outside air in the cabinet and forces it through the coils, thus cooling the evaporator within and forcing it to give up heat and revert to a liquid. The evaporator blower is usually of the "squirrel-cage" reduce noise, while the condenser fan is a simple fan blade with difference—a "stinger" ring is incorporated around the outer difference of the blades. This ring runs in a trough formed under condenser, to which is diverted all condensate water off the evaporator. If you listen closely on a humid day, you may hear the water slit being thrown against the hot condenser coils. This simple device I only reduces the amount of condensate that could drip from the unit also increases the efficiency of the condenser. Depending upon I make and design of the unit, the condenser fan and evaporator fan lit be mounted directly to opposite shafts of a single motor. In investigating an air-conditioning problem, look and listen clue to determine its nature and general area. You may find as three motors running within a small area. Always unplug tic it before exposing electrical connections. Do not operate air condition if cabinet with the fan blades exposed. File condenser fan can also play tricks. If it turns too slowly, the pressure can become greater than normal, increasing the load on the compressor and causing it to shut down due to the action of the over load protector. Even a bush growing outside the window in which the air conditioning is mounted can grow enough in the early spring to block air flow. Look closely for these deceptive faults. I've known of compressors being changed for just such minor problems.
